Four shooting incidents keep city cops busy

Story PictureAlso fighting for life at the K.H.M.H. is twenty-six year old Emrick Meggs. Meggs, who was the first victim in a series of shootings over the weekend, caught a bullet in the right side of the head around nine on Friday night. According to Deputy Officer in Charge of C.I.B., Inspector Alden Dawson, a team quickly reached the scene at the corner of Yabra Road and West Collet Canal and then proceeded to the K.H.M.H.

Insp. Alden Dawson, Dep. Officer in Charge, C.I.B.
“As a result, police went over to the K.H.M.H. where they found Emrick Meggs at the Karl Heusner trauma room, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the back of the right ear, which penetrated the head. The police conducted an investigating into that matter and at this time we are looking for a person whom we believe could assist us in this investigation, by the name of Brandon Taylor. According to the medical report at this time, Mr. Meggs’ condition is critical, but he is stable. … Again we believe maybe some previous misunderstanding between the two parties.”

An hour and half after police responded to the shooting incident on West Collet Canal, another crime scene team was back on the streets. According to the investigating officer, Inspector Andrew Ramirez, by the time it was all over there were two victims suffering from multiple injuries. At the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital police observed the intended target, twenty year old Zane Garnett suffering from injuries to his right pelvic area and two gunshot wounds to his left leg. Also in the trauma area was thirty-one year old Dionicio Howard, who police believe was an innocent bystander. According to Ramirez, Howard was fixing a vehicle when he was hit in the left foot by one of the flying bullets.

Insp. Andrew Ramirez, Investigating Officer
“Our initial investigations reveals that Zane was standing in front of his residence on Elston Kerr Street along with two other individuals when shots were fired from outside of Zane’s yard by two unknown assailants. As a result, both female persons went to seek refuge or hide from the area were being pursued by these individuals who continued firing shots in their direction.”

The two armed masked gunmen then ran off. Police say they do not know the motive for the shooting and are looking for the suspects.

Five hours later, around three on Saturday morning, police were again called out in response to gunfire, this time on Amara Avenue near the intersection with King Street. There police found twenty-one year old Shayphon Domingo suffering from wounds to the abdomen, left thigh, and back.

Asp. Chester Williams, O.C., Crime Investigation Branch, Bz. City
“Our investigation so far has revealed that Domingo was hanging out in the area along with a female friend when one male person, who was identified as Vincent Galvez—with whom he had a previous misunderstanding with earlier in the day, came back with a firearm and fired several shots—causing injuries to Domingo.”

“We have arrested and charged Vincent Galvez today and he was charged with Attmpted Murder, Use of Deadly Means of Harm, and Dangerous Harm.”

Meanwhile, Domingo remains at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in a stable condition. Galvez was charged with Attempted Murder, Use of Deadly Means of Harm, and Dangerous Harm. He was remanded to prison until his next court date on February fifth.

Later on Sunday evening Assistant Superintendent of Police and the officer in charge of Crimes Investigation Branch, Chester Williams, was on his way to investigate a previous shooting incident when upon reaching the junction of Neal’s Penn Road and Central American Boulevard he saw two suspicious young men following another individual a bicycle. Then the suspects opened fire.

Asp. Chester Williams
“My attention was drawn to two male persons riding on separate bicycles and another male person riding alone. The two male persons, who were on separate bicycles riding together, were riding contrary to traffic on the boulevard behind the other persons was riding with the flow of traffic. When I saw one of the male persons who were together took out what appeared to be a firearm, and fired five shots in the direction of the person who was riding alone. Subsequent to that, the patrol team that I was riding with pursued the persons while I remained on the scene to contain the situation. The pursuit resulted in the apprehension of Carlton Tasher, who was also found in possession of the point thirty-eight calibre revolver. He has subsequently been arrested and charged for the crime of Attempted Murder, Use of Deadly Means of Harm, and Grevious Harm. The victim in this particular case is one, Kaylen Matura.”

“At this point in time, what we understand is there is a misunderstanding between Tasher and Matura and that misunderstanding is what may have led to the incident that occurred yesterday.”

Jacqueline Godwin
“Mister Williams, it seems that all of these shootings are a result of misunderstandings between the individuals involved. Are the police planning to do anything to address this situation?

Asp. Chester Williams
“As you know Jackie, we have had previous incidents like this occurring before and we were able to contain the situation by meeting with the parties involved. At this point in time Mr. Jefferies, who is the Officer Commanding the Eastern Division, is planning a similar meeting with this new group that has started to seemingly want to settle their differences with each other by the use of a gun. So yes, we are looking at it very seriously. We are doing an overall assessment, after which we will see which direction we will go in order to try and resolve the problem. “

Kaylen Matura remains in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in a stable condition. Williams credits quick police response and strong community participation for the quick arrest.
