Mothers Organized for Peace to hold weekend rally

Story PictureIn response to the resurgence of gun violence in Belize City, on Sunday Mothers Organized for Peace will be holding a special memorial service in memory of murder victims. According to organizers, the event will include the laying of wreaths and an awareness rally. The activities are scheduled to start at two in the afternoon with the mass at St. John’s Anglican Cathedral.

Therese Felix, Vice President. M.O.P.
“We have to make a stand now, so dah time fi mek we get up and stand up and do something now. So this dah the beginning of something now, this memorial and from there we move forward.”

Erwin X, President, M.O.P
“We are calling on the community and the nation to come out with a wreath, a flower, a bouquet, with a picture, with memorabilia of loved ones. And after the service is over, there will be a procession through the streets of Belize, proceeding towards the burying ground where we will find and mark the places where our loved ones have been placed.”

Karen Adolphus, Member, M.O.P.
“We will have a lot of people. And I think that from here on people will know that we must stop this, we must stop having our mothers crying.”

Erwin X
“I see the activities to be very effective, because ineffectiveness does not produce change and the earth is in motion and in order for us as a people to bring about the changes that we need, especially positive changes among our young men and in the minds of our young men who are belligerent towards each other and are causing the violence and are causing the heat, we must make a stand and create motion. And so by having mothers stand up, who are responsible for the birth and the life of loved ones lost and loved ones alive, then it is creating change. We would like to call on more mothers, on more of our people at all facets of society to support.”

The awareness rally will be held at the Wilton Cumberbatch Football Field on Caesar Ridge Road.
