Telemedia awards 14 scholarships to deserving students
From a total of three hundred and seventy applications, fourteen deserving students from across the country were awarded scholarships to the high schools of their choice. It’s the eighteenth year of the Telemedia Scholarship program and the 2009 recipients and their parents gathered at the Radisson this afternoon to be recognized for their hard work and dedication through their primary school years. The program caters to standard six graduates that excelled in school but are not financially equipped to move on to high school. News Five was present for the awards and was schooled by Telemedia Board Director and Executive Committee Member, Ediberto Tesucum, on what the scholarship program is all about.
Ediberto Tesucum, Board Dir./Exec. Committee Member, Telemedia
“We find it our duty to help young ones to grow to go to high school to attain their education and also to help them to keep out of the bad effects of society that sometimes they encounter in life. We think that it’s very important for students to continue with their studies and of course, it was one of our goals, we are here and as long as we can we will continue helping also because we feel it’s a very important ingredient to society as a whole.”
Patrick Faber, Minister of Education
“It is the Ministry of Education’s responsibility primarily of course to improve the quality of education and to provide educational opportunities. But there are other people who can be doing that and so this initiative by Telemedia, it’s not only their scholarship program, of course they have other initiatives as well that have led the way for other corporate citizens to show that they can do a part and play their role in helping us to create a better education system in this country.”
Keosha Vernon, Scholarship Recipient
“I feel very happy today cause my parents don’t have the money to send me to high school and I will be the first one to go to high school out of my family.”
Delahnie Bain

Keosha Vernon

“There are a set of criteria that are set up by the company, which the committee looks at very closely, for example the economic status of the children, the performance in school, their PSE exams, their conduct and even their status in respect to whether they come from single parents or not, as well there are other criteria but these are some of the main ones that we look at in order to be able to decide who becomes a deserving student to get a scholarship.”
The application process for the Telemedia Scholarship Program begins in May of each year. Telemedia has given out more than four hundred scholarships valuing over a million dollars under its scholarship program.
