Woman fined after dog bites cop
A Belize City woman has been fined a hundred and fifty dollars for “Permitting an Unmuzzled Ferocious Dog to be at Large”. Thirty-seven year old Juanita Uter pled guilty to the seldom heard of offence today and has until February tenth to pay up or in default spend one month in jail. The charges against Uter arose from an incident that occurred on September second. On that day, police constable Ivan Galvez was riding his bike in the vicinity of Vernon and Sibun streets when he was attacked by five unfettered canines. Galvez says that one of the animals, a mixed breed pit bull, got hold of his right leg and bit him. The P.C. says he tried to find out who the dog belonged to, but at the time no one would fess up. Further investigations by police led them to Uter, who was in the area at the time of the incident and who allegedly laughed at the P.C. when he was bitten. But Uter’s troubles may only have just begun, because according to Prosecutor Sergeant Frank Augustine, Galvez can sue the vendor in a civil action for medical expenses, time lost from work, and other pain and suffering.
