Cop charged with murder in Los Lagos shooting
Today the police department, acting on a directive from the D.P.P., arrested one of its own and charged him for the crime of Murder. The charges against Constable Jesus Maroquin stem from an incident on September twenty-seventh in Los Lagos. On that day, police responded to a burglary in progress at a home in the area. According to the authorities, the man, later identified as Egbert Gordon, barricaded himself inside a room in the house and refused to let them enter. They ended up shooting the lock off the door and say that when they entered the room, Gordon reached for what looked like a firearm. Maroquin responded by firing one shot that caught Gordon in the head, killing him instantly. Gordon’s family has maintained that while he had mental problems, they do not believe the twenty-five calibre gun police claimed was recovered from the scene was his. Gordon’s family announced its intention to apply to the Supreme Court on Tuesday for a judicial review of the Police Commissioner’s failure to follow the D.P.P.’s instructions. That application should now be rendered moot by the arraignment of Maroquin, scheduled for Tuesday morning in Magistrate’s Court.
