James Adderley’s and the weekend sports

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

Game I of the Championship series in this PLB Football Competition got off to a roaring start inside a jammed packed Isidoro Stadium yesterday as the 2 Belmopan teams—Police United and Belmopan Bandits—looked to grab game I of the home and away format. We flash to the stands where we find a first in our football history as the Police cadets training inside Capital City came out in mass with a show of uniformity to deliver maximum support to Police United who stepped out in the role of home team. The 1st real chance at goal comes after a rather extended feeling out process when Israel Hercules lets loose this left foot that forces Charlie Slusher into a necessary save.

We’re at the 24th minute when Daniel Jimenez mounts this individual effort that breaks through the Bandits backline to finish with a right foot swing that gives the Lawmen a 1-zip lead. There was nothing Woodrow West could do. Jeremy James then gets this chance 4 minutes later to come up with the equalizer but this time he botches the strike at goal. Folks, the Police is operating on all cylinders today and this long distance strike by Trevor at midfield, forces Woodrow West into a big time diving save. In the final minute of regulation 1st half, Jacinto Bermudez deals to Dennis Serano who in heavy traffic launches a left foot strike that embarrasses Charlie Slusher to tie the ballgame at 1 apiece.

Early in 2nd half play, Dennis Jimenez triggers this set piece to Orlando Jimenez whose head touch would have meant big trouble for Woodrow West had not the ball rebound off Denmark Casey. Meanwhile, when Ian Gaynair finds Jerome James with this pass, the striker again fails to get the ball over the goal line, but we must add he was crowded by Policemen and Charlie Slusher did his part. Against the run of play, Police gets this opportunity to break the tie when Andres Makin finds Amin August who fails with the left foot. This 2 man play off set piece that sees Jacinto Bermudez set table for David Madrid could have given the Bandits the lead but the ball sails over the crossbar.

It’s getting late so Amin August takes it on himself to rescue the Police and he almost makes it a reality until Albert Thurton comes up with a most important block. Off this center from the left side Evan Mariano gets his chance to be the hero for Police but opts for power instead of accuracy. Game I ends 1-1. So now we head to the F.F.B. Stadium this Sunday, December 30th for Game II. 2 teams enter into this final match—the winner takes the 1st PLB football title.

In domino news, play into Travelers Limited Domino Tournament at Orange Walk yesterday saw surprise get a default win from Renders. Kings mashed JRS 100 to 90 and TNT blew up Chan Pine Ridge 100 to 74.

Finally, in cycling news, Jairo Campos beats Ernest Meighan for the top spot in the elite class in the 1st Leslie’s Imports and Belize City Council Pre-Xmas race with Mark Staine taking 3rd. Ernest Meighan nevertheless grabbed the Masters win, Patricia Chavarria won the female class while Giovanni Lovell prevailed at the Junior Category.
