Godfrey Smith urges Fonseca to retire

If high on your list of burning questions is whether Minister of Home Affairs Ralph Fonseca will seek re-election in Belize Rural Central, then you may be in luck. According to his colleague, Minister of Tourism and First Deputy Leader of the Peoples United Party Godfrey Smith, it is time for him to bow out gracefully. That’s the conclusion Smith draws in his weekly column in the Belize Times. To quote:

“Mr. Fonseca has, irreversibly it seems, become a flash-point, within and without the Party. His detractors will not change their minds about him. The pragmatic path, the path of least resistance, lies in Mr. Fonseca announcing that he will not run again.”

Smith’s weekly Belize Times column, called Flashpoint, has in two weeks become the most important reading in the paper. Conventional wisdom indicates that he pens the thoughts that are on the Prime Minister’s mind.
