Unidentified cyclist killed in O.W. road accident
The Orange Walk Bypass, created to keep disruptive sugar cane traffic off the streets of Orange Walk Town, was supposed to prevent accidents … and to a large extent it has. But even the safest roads have their mishaps … like the one that occurred yesterday. According to police an unidentified bicyclist was killed just before noon Monday near Palmar Village when he was hit by a loaded cane truck. Driver of the truck, twenty-five year old Rafael Calam of Caledona Village, told police that the cyclist riding in front of him suddenly turned across the road and a collision could not be avoided. The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at Northern Regional Hospital. He is described as five foot five inches tall, thirty-five to forty-five years old, of Hispanic appearance and wearing three-quarter jeans pants and white shirt. The police are asking anyone who can identify the deceased to please visit the hospital morgue. Calam has been detained pending charges.
