New newspaper
Belize’s newest entry into the journalism business, the Independent Reformer, hit the stands today. According to its inaugural editorial, the paper “contains almost no hard news” and will instead “focus on opinion and editorial pieces.” Following that dictum, the first issue includes articles lambasting government for its lack of commitment to political reform, coddling of the aquaculture industry, and over taxation of the tourism sector. The newspaper costs a dollar and is scheduled to appear every Tuesday.
