Dancers put local twist on classical ballet

Tis the season for boys and girls to show off newly acquired skills garnered from organized programs in drama, music and dance as part of traditional end of the year performances. In the old capital, young artists have pooled their talents to put a local twist on a classical favourite. News Five’s Jacqueline Godwin reports.

The Christmas story, the Nutcracker, is based on a fairy tale written in 1816 but in the 2006 version, instead of a magical journey through the land of snow, the background is the rainforest of Belize. This weekend, four local dance studios have pooled their efforts to choreograph the first ever Belizean Nutcracker.
