Family mourns latest city murder victim

Story PictureAnother Belize City family is in mourning tonight following a fatal shooting incident on the streets of the old capital. And as I found out today, while there are more questions than answers about the motive of this latest murder, a mother’s grief is heartbreaking.

Jacienta Gordon, Mother of Deceased
?If he is out there and he is listening he took my son life but he left me back her to punish. Everyday I get up it reminds me of my son. I can?t even go in my son?s room because I cannot sleep?

Jacqueline Godwin, Reporting
Twenty-one year old Damion Gordon was standing at the corner of Iguana and Seagull Streets around eight thirty on Sunday night when a car, described as a white Toyota Camry, pulled up and a young man inside the vehicle fired several shots through the passenger window. One of the bullets caught Gordon in the right side of his chest. The victim was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital but died shortly after he arrived.

Jacienta Gordon
?He came home had his Sunday dinner and from there he went and bathe and change his clothes. He told me that he was going around the lane for a walk and I was sitting down on the chair outside and he asked me why I was looking at him funny and I said, Damion your hair need to get plat. He said my sister will do it for me but ih the loose out her daughter hair, so I told him okay then and he went around the lane. I didn?t know that that would be the last time that I would see him.?

Belize City police say they do not know if Gordon was the intended target or what was the motive behind the shooting.

Jacienta Gordon
?No, no Damion no mess with anybody. He no have much problem with anybody, he is a little boy. Whenever you pass here he is always in the yard or he goes to his friend two house from here or goes round the lane. He was a quiet person. He no give anybody any trouble, so I no know why the boy shoot him.?

Jacineta Gordon says she does not know why anyone would want her son dead but has a question for the shooter.

Jacienta Gordon
?But I would a want to ask the boy why he shoot my son. If my son did him something he could have come to me because I am not a parent that encourages children in bad things. I try be nice to everybody. They can come here anytime and I always offer them a plate a dinner or in any way I can help them. I try talk to other little boys around here and thing. I no know why the boy did it.?

Authorities say are trying to locate the white Toyota Camry that was seen fleeing the scene after the incident. The police do not know if the car had license plates but that disturbing trend has prompted the police to address the problem.

G. Michael Reid, Police Press Officer
?The police are very concern that a number of crimes have been committed by individuals driving vehicles without license plates. We know that cars must be licensed and insured, all motor vehicles actually. The plate must be prominently displayed. There are a number of cars and vehicles that are roaming the street without license plates. Some have foreign license plates for long period of time and we know that a certain restriction as far as the length of time that a vehicle can be in the country with foreign license plates. Also another matter is the dealer plates, there are a lot of vehicles running about with the dealer plates for a period of time and these dealer plates also have restrictions on them.?

The authorities are appealing to anyone with information in the Damion Gordon murder case to call the nearest police station or Crime Stoppers at 0-800-922-8477.
