F.C. Belize takes game 1 in R.F.G. finals

Story PictureGood evening. I?m James Adderley, so sit back, relax and enjoy this portion of Sports Monday. Undefeated Wagiya of Dangriga came to the city yesterday after giving up the home field advantage to face F.C. Belize at the M.C.C. Grounds in game one of the R.F.G. Insurance championship series.

The high from eliminating Hankook Verdes during the week gives the host team serious momentum, so they come up firing immediately and really should have come up with a goal right here.

Tyrone Muschamp keeps the pressure on with this move on the left side that finds goalkeeper West doing just enough to chill this dangerous situation.

The visitors finally get going off the set piece with this header but a well positioned Charlie Slusher snares it easily.

Folks we?re thirty-one minutes in when defenseman Hilberto Muschamp finds himself going towards his own goal to make the defensive stop. He doesn?t see his keeper coming out of the goal and it?s a serious error that allows Deon Flowers to score into an empty goal. F.C. Belize goes up 1-zip just like that.

Dangriga?s response is immediate with this right foot bomb from Deon Flowers, but the crossbar intervenes and at the half Belize City is up 1-zip.

In the second half goalkeeper Deon McCauly tries to make his presence felt, and gets a good look at goal but the left foot travels wide.

One thing for sure though people, today Deon Flowers is the man and with impeccable timing he out runs the Dangriga defence to embarrass goalkeeper West. The city is up 2-zip.

Can undefeated Wagiya and former champ come back from two down? To its credit the Griga team steps up the pressure and indeed Robert Muschamp is not very far from halving the deficit right here.

The pay-off comes when Hilberto Muschamp floats this ball into the danger zone and a right away left foot touch by Deon Flowers gets Wagiya onto the scoreboard at the seventy-fourth minute.

Muschamp then looks to force the tie himself with this shot but Charlie Slusher shuts the door. At the other end F.C. Belize tries to extend the lead off this corner kick but Wagiya hangs tough.

Darwin Castillo gets into the act of scoring the equalizer for Dangriga but his shot inches outside the upright.

F.C. Belize prevails by hanging on to the 2-1 victory, halting Wagiya?s undefeated run at eleven outings. Game two of this home and away championship series moves to the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga on Saturday November eighteenth at seven thirty p.m.

Going in the big question is people: is a one goal lead enough for F.C. Belize going into Dangriga? Of course, we?ll soon find out.

On the B league Pickstock held Benny?s Nairi?s United to a 3-3 draw yesterday to claim to 2006 championship and we say congratulations.

Turning to the basketball scene, the over thirty-five competition at Big Birds Isle staged its championship match Saturday night. And we?re at the tip off when Angus Walla Cherrington of undefeated Albert Hawks jumps against Winston ?The Paster? Archibald of Early Risers Wheels to kick off money-time.

Glen Arzu immediately picks the pocket of Cherrington to score the first point of the ballgame.

Vince the Postman Estrada answers with this spin move that leads to the easy two.

Noralez then goes for three, misses badly, but Pastor Archibald puts it up and knows what to do with it. He would finish with ten points.

Lennox Flowers then gets hot for Wheels as he goes for the three. He would finish with ten points. In the meantime for Albert the bright spot remains Stanly ?Jordan? Reneau who would strike for twelve points in this ballgame.

Indeed it?s looking more like upset when Flowers gets this tre to before the half as Albert lead is now 29-27 at the half.

However in second half, things began to get for Albert Hawks, the Postman Estrada sneaks in for two. He would lead all scores with twenty-four points.

Minister Mark Espat also got hot sinking this three. He would finish with twelve points for his team. The Postman then delivers the pill to Pa Vick McKenzie who gets the easy two. Albert Hawks goes on to post the 73-60 big W and claim the 2006 title in undefeated style and we say: good show guys.

In the battle for third place Kulture Builders got seventeen points from Jaime McKoy and sixteen from Richard Meighan to beat Bulls 62-50 in regulation play and they finish in the number three spot and we say congratulations.

In the post game ceremonies Lincoln Jones of Early Risers Wheels was awarded the Eldest Sports Trophy. Phill Gallathy also of Wheels got the Sportsmanship Award, and Vince the Postman Estrada who averaged with fifteen points of a game was voted Most Valuable Player. Hey Vince when you big you large.

Nevertheless, that is it for now folks. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah, over all I?m James Adderley.
