Officer shot during Corozal weed bust
An anti-drug operation in the north ended in bloodshed this morning after the weed farmers shot at the police. According to Corozal cops, around five today they discovered a marijuana field off the Consejo Road and were in the process of securing the area when they came under attack from assailants hiding in the surrounding bush. An exchange of gunfire ensued and in the chaos, Constable Joseph Gilharry was injured in his left shoulder. The officers retreated with their bleeding comrade and rushed him to the Corozal Hospital for treatment. Gilharry has since been admitted to the Northern Regional Hospital in Orange Walk in serious but stable condition. Officers returned to the area today and destroyed fifteen hundred weed plants measuring four to seven feet in height. Up to news time tonight, no one had been detained for questioning in connection with the shooting.
