U.B./police investigate student drunk sex report

Tonight, the University of Belize is facing one of its toughest challenges following reports of an incident on campus last weekend involving students, alcohol and sex. Details are still sketchy but this afternoon, university officials confirmed that sometime between last Sunday evening and early Monday morning, two female students and two male students were socializing. During the get-together both women became drunk and passed out. What happened next is now the point of an official investigation by the university and the police.

?The dorm has security cameras inside the building and that may, and it is said that there are some video images on that camera that may provide some information in terms of what may have happened, in addition that what we have been able to get from talking to the students. The dorms are not our dorms. They are on the university compound but they have an independent management. And the incident happened there. We have been following up on that incident, we have met with the principals in the situation and we have subsequent to that, involved the, an investigation is being done by the police to determine whether anything criminal occurred. We have been in touch with Human Services to ensure that some provision of support is provided for the students who need that support.?

?There is no allegation of rape as far as the students are concerned. We are still, as I said, looking at that to find out the how, what exactly happened and we can?t get that until the students themselves cooperate. There were no drugs involved, there was some drinking involved but no drugs involved. At least not that we are aware of.?

?Dr Lewis, what would be your message to both U.B. parents and students as well as the community at large??

?Well these are young adults and these students need to aware of the effects of alcohol, the effects of drugs and the effects of those things that are responsible for making them you know, losing their inhibitions. Perhaps not be in control as they are supposed to be. They need to be aware of things like when you get into sexual activity, the risks that you expose yourself to. There are some gaps in terms of how the dorms are managed. We have a dorm committee on which members of the University community serves, and not just since this incident, we have been working with the managers, the owners of the dorm in order to get instituted the various controls that are necessary.?

According to U.B. administrators, this is the first such incident to be reported by a member of the student body.
