Electronic monitoring of major crime now a reality for precincts

The location, frequency and body count combined form important data for the police department’s major crime statistics. Those statistics are used to determine which areas would be deemed Crime Ridden Areas, gang related and in need of additional police support. The analysis has become more advanced and according to Assistant Commissioner of Police and Head of Eastern Division, Miguel Segura, a special unit will monitor major crime by monitoring frequent data from precincts.

“I’m concerned I have a unit doing computerized statistics by precincts. It’s also worthy to know that within each precincts, we have sectors. Within those sectors, I will be asking them to show me the dots. With these dots, then we have the approach either through the community policing or the law enforcement aspect to address whatever strategy to address those dots. I know for a fact that last year countrywide as being the head of CIB we had sixteen murders and it was the highest last year. Belize City was twelve. But this is a challenge heading into April because Easter was the first week in April last year. But to the statistic, we are working on that; taking into consideration that the precincts became operational on the twenty-seventh of February. So holding accountable, after March/April, we will be reviewing them y commander and saying where they are. But we do have a unit here at Raccoon that will be monitoring by precincts where these dots are.”

According to the latest crime statistics released by the police, there have been more murders and cases of carnal knowledge this year than there were for the same period last year.
