Suspect charged in shooting of shopkeeper
One man is behind bars tonight, accused in the attempted murder of a Belize City businesswoman. According to police on Friday night forty-eight year old Seng Xui Ling was shot in her face as she manned the counter of her shop, Diana Store on Central American Boulevard. In her statement to authorities, Seng says that a man on a bicycle ordered a number of goods but when she returned with the groceries, he refused to pay. Following a brief exchange the hard pay shopper left but returned a short time later armed with a handgun. The gunman pointed the weapon at Seng and fired three times before disappearing into the night. The injured woman was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where she remains in serious but stable condition. Following their investigations into the incident, police have arrested twenty-eight year old George Young and charged him with Attempted Murder, Dangerous Harm and Use of Deadly Means of Harm. The accused appeared in Belize City’s Magistrate Court this morning where he was formally arraigned and remanded to Hattieville Prison.
