Pallotti to hold radiothon for building fund

Story PictureLack of space is a perennial problem for Belize’s educational institutions, with many schools reporting that year after year they have to turn away students because they’ve simply got nowhere to put them. That reality exists at Pallotti High School but this year, the sisters are embarking on an ambitious project to increase capacity. And with seventy-two thousand dollars already invested in piles and a foundation for a new building, the school is holding a radio-ton this weekend in an effort to raise money to complete the first floor in time for classes next year.

Sister Clara Teul, Organiser
?We initiated and started to build a new school building, which will be a three-story building. But we just want to finish at least the first floor that we can take in more students for the next school year.?

Kendra Griffith, Reporting
?How much are you all looking to raise??

Sister Clara Teul
?Well for this radio-telethon we?re hoping to raise at least fifty thousand. That?s to go for the third phase of the foundation, which is to put the beams. We will have food galore to sell, we will have music entertainment, our students will be showcasing their talents, like every hour I guess they will be broadcasting. They will be performing for the audience that will be out there.?

Kendra Griffith
?With the addition of this new building, how many more students will you all be able to add to the campus??

Sister Clara Teul
?Well hopefully we will be able to take in at least, approximately about ninety more students. Right now we were only able to take in ninety for this new school year. Total, we have a hundred in first form and we only have eleven classrooms, so we need to expand to be able to allow other young women to come into the school and have the education they deserve.?

The three story building is estimated to cost one point four million dollars. The radio-ton will air on Love FM, beginning at nine on Saturday morning.
