Zetina will leave Immigration Department
He was a popular police commissioner whose openness and candour set him apart from most of his predecessors … but as Director of Immigration, not even his extreme likeability could save Carmen Zetina from losing his job. A government press release today announced that the embattled director will be stepping down at the end of this year. Among the problems encountered on his watch, were the unsolved theft, first of two hundred passports from his Belmopan headquarters and more recently another one hundred passports, not to mention the revelation of a less-than-transparent scheme to sell visas to so-called investors from mainland China. Who will replace Zetina is not clear, although the release indicates that the “management team” will “actively participate in the transition and succession.”
