Cops make arrest in Cayo mass murder
It was one of the most shocking crimes in our young nation’s history but tonight police have arrested the man they say killed a family of six from the Cayo district. The alleged face of evil belongs to Alberto Ara, also known as Ali, a resident of Ontario Village. Ara now stands accused of six counts of Murder and one count of Arson. The police investigation into the murder of Elias Mayen, Maria Suchite and their four children: seven year old Ingrid, six year old Alex, four year old Marco Antonio and two year old Victor, was led by Senior Superintendent James Magdaleno and a host of officers. According to the initial findings of that team, on Monday night Ara went to socialize at the Mayen home in Iguana Creek. Apparently, the two men had previously worked together in Ontario and had become friends. Mayen and Ara began to drink … and then they began to argue. Police will not say exactly what that argument was about but they are convinced that during the dispute, Ara went into a murderous rage and attacked everyone in the house. It is then that Ara allegedly set the house on fire before fleeing the scene. Ara is scheduled to appear in San Ignacio Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. As we reported on Tuesday, neighbours say that just after midnight, they heard screams and then saw flames and smoke coming from the Mayen home. Police would later discover the charred remains of the Mayen family in the embers. But arson and mass murder are not Ara’s only problems. Tonight authorities tell News Five that Ara is also being investigated for another murder that took place in Blackman Eddy in August. In that incident twenty-four year old Marvin Ramirez reported to police that he was at home with his wife and friend, Hipolito Choco, when a machete wielding man entered the house and started swinging. Choco would later die from two severe chop wounds to the head.
