Runaway car thief detained pending charges
In an update to reports of grand theft auto and subsequent hit and run last night in Ladyville, medical officials tell News Five that a mother and her ten year old child injured during the incident are recovering at home. According to personnel at the Belize Defence Force Hospital at Price Barracks, the woman and her daughter were brought in by police late Monday evening. The child suffered minor abrasions but her mother appears to have taken the brunt of the impact. She drifted in and out of consciousness for a couple of hours but we understand that doctors stabilized her condition and she was subsequently released. The two were knocked down in the vicinity of Lake Gardens in Ladyville by a taxi driven at the time by Albert Guy. The owner of the car, a black Crown Victoria owned by Howell Pandy, has since reported that Guy chartered the taxi to travel to Orange Walk but when they pulled into a gas station to put in fuel, Guy got behind the wheel and took off. Police were able to set up a barricade at the Boom junction so when Guy arrived, he made a u-turn, heading back towards Ladyville, to avoid arrest. It was at this point that Guy is said to have crashed into the two pedestrians. Guy was eventually apprehended by Pandy and a friend with help from area residents. Tonight police tell News Five that Guy remains in custody pending charges.
