Boyfriend charged in death of W.P.C.
Tonight the man accused of shooting his wife in the chest over the weekend is behind bars at Hattieville Prison. According to court reports, this morning, thirty-one year old Ken Young was formally arraigned on the charges of manslaughter by negligence, manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault. The inclusion of the last two counts means that Young could not be offered bail. No plea was taken but during the proceedings, his lawyer, Dickie Bradley, did ask Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord to grant permission for Young to see a doctor. Bradley submitted that his client suffers from memory loss, a condition being treated since May by Dr. Noel Cervantes. Furthermore, the attorney claims that at least two police officers beat his client while in custody. Lord granted the request and ordered that Young be returned to court on the thirtieth of October. Young was detained on Sunday afternoon after he shot his common law wife, Woman Police Constable Myrna Lopez, at close range in Grace Bank village in the Belize District. Reports suggest that Young and Lopez were involved in an altercation with two men, Robert Dominguez and Andrew Armstrong, when he pulled out his licensed nine millimetre pistol. The weapon fired and struck Lopez in the chest. As Young rushed his critically wounded girlfriend to Belize City, his Toyota Camry crashed into a lamppost in Sand Hill village. By the time help arrived and transported the officer to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, she was declared dead on arrival. Travelling with the couple at the time of the incident where Lopez’s two children.
