James Adderley’s Sports Highlight

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is sports Monday.

Week 13 of the FLB season found FC Belize inside the friendly Confines of the MCC grounds yesterday needing all three points to remain in the 4 team playoff picture as it took on San Ignacio United in a must win situation. However it’s the visitor looking good early when Leonard Valdez triggers this vicious long distance set piece that is denied only by the horizontal bar. A few minutes later FC Belize gets its chance at goal off a set piece launched by John King but it inches outside the target. FC Belize now continues to press the action and almost open the scoreboard off their individual effort by john King who beats the goal keeper off his line only to see his shot at an open goal bounce off the crossbar.  At the 25th minute Steven Baizar displays good control in heavy traffic to maintain possession and launch this right foot that beats the on rushing keeper to give the home team a 1-zip lead. 6 minutes later Baizar benefits from poor defensive play to unleash this beautiful curve that lands in the back of the net for the 2-zip lead.

We’re some 12 minutes into 2nd half play when Steven Baizar does it again by beating the defensive to raise his ball over the goal keeper to record his first at this level and give his team a 3-zip lead. Frustration begins to set in on San Ignacio so Dudley Smith takes it out on Ryan Gill with his pegs for which he is promptly chased off the field. Gill would return to the action. At the 68th minute Amian Crawford pushes the ball pass the San Ignacio keeper to make it a 4-nil FC Belize lead. In the meantime the visitors almost pull on back on this long distance floater from Dudley Smith but Glenford Chimilio does get his hand on it. FC Belize goes on take all 3 points from the 4-zip big win

In other action around the league, Belmopan bandits stumbled over the weekend with a 2-1 loss at Placencia Assassins, the B.D.F. again handled Police United this time in a 2-1 score and Verdes FC banked San Felipe Barcelona 1-nil. Thus with 1 week to go Belmopan Bandits lead the league with 29 points, the B.D.F. has 26, FC Belize 20, Police 19, Verdes FC 16, Placencia Assassins 14, San Ignacio 13 and San Felipe Barcelona 11. As it stands only Verdes has an outside shot at making the 4 team playoffs.  They must win this weekend and Police United must loose.

Looking to week 14, the final outing in the PLB. On Saturday at 7:30pm Belmopan will host San Ignacio. On Sunday at 3:30pm the BDF takes on Verdes at the Norman Broaster, while Placencia Assassin play host to FC Belize. The top 3 teams are already assured of post season play.

Checking the results from week 9 of the Dangriga Mayors Cup over the weekend conquerors beat Riverside Nibs2- nil, Valley Pride and Sampsons FC played to a 1-1 draw, umadagu mauled new site in a 5-izp blast while Benguche and Red Bank battled to a 1-1 stalement. Now here are the results from the OW 1st Div. tournament from week 1. San Jose crushed San Felipe 8-2, Sinbad FF got the 1-zip win over San Estevan, Denny’s Athletes beat Crysta FC 3-1. San Felipe and Yo Creek settled for a 2 all draw. Progresso handled Carmelita 4-1 and Guinea Grass shelled San Lazaro 2-nil.

Turning to the Veteran Championships staged by the Belize Table Tennis Association, yesterday inside the Belize Elementary School Auditorium money time brought a monster struggle between the defending champion Carlos Cui and former great Billy Musa. Jr. This really shows the level of skill displayed by both palyers. Musa gets the point but it’s Carlos Cui who wins the battle in a 3- zip score to repeat as veteran champion Dan Habet of San Ignacio who was ousted by Billy Musa Jr. rolled over Sui Pam Chen of Dangriga to grab 3rd place in the event sponsored by Travellers Liquors.

In cycling news, the 2nd annual Ariel Rosado foundation Bike ride went off without a hitch in its 2nd Annual edition on Saturday. This is what the start looks like as it takes off from Galen University en route to the Hour Bar on Princess Margaret Drive. It’s not a race but 88 miles is not an easy ride and folks from all walks of life came out to raise funds for education in honor of the fallen cyclist Ariel Rosado. Here’s a view of the pelathon that really shows the level of support the Ariel Rosado foundation attracts. At the finish line we find all winners and we are extremely thankful to all the participants who came out and especially those who were able to resist the temptation to make it a race. Over fifty riders completed the ride

Jah over all I’m James Adderley.
