F.C. Belize drops Belmopan Bandits in R.F.G. play

Story PictureGood evening. I?m James Adderley with this week?s turn out of Sports Monday. Despite the tremendous rains that shook up Belize City yesterday, the B.P.F.L. was able to complete week eight of the R.F.G. cup tournament schedule as advertised.

So we go to the M.C.C. Grounds for the big time match-up between F.C. Belize and the Belmopan Bandits on a pitch that has been thoroughly soaked.

We?re only seven minutes in when poor defensive clearing delivers this ball to Norman ?Tilliman? Nunez who unleashed a right foot bomb to give the City Team a 1-zip lead.

This corner kick from Leonel Frazier allows Ernest Wiltshire to fire this dangerous bomb in response, but his ball scales the crossbar.

However, at the other end its Deon Flowers providing, motion, space and passing for Deon McCauly to punch it past the Bandits keeper Gregory Griffith for the 2-nil lead for F.C. Belize twenty-two minutes in.

Again the capital city team goes to the set piece for a quick response, it?s a good attempt but Charlie Slusher is not fooled.

Wiltshire then deals to Leonel Frazier who simply can?t get enough on the ball due to good F.C. defence. Persistence for Belmopan finally pays off when Wayne Wiltshire speeds right side to get this pill in front of the goal. Deon Frazier catches up with it and at intermission it?s a 2-1 F.C. Belize lead.

Folks five minutes into second half Deon Flowers again works his magic to deliver the pill to Deon McCauly, who scores his second goal of the match as the host team takes a 3-1 lead.

The visitors immediately try to reply when Leon Frazier fires but the ball zooms past the wrong side of the stick. For sure folks Jarbi Alvarez definitely wants back this header which should have made it a 3-2 deficit for the Bandits.

After that the game gets easy for F.C. Belize and maybe that?s why they didn?t capitalize right here. Ce?st la vie people, F.C. Belize goes on to record the 3-1 big w.

In other action around the league Hankook Verdes hammered Alpha into Omega with a 5-zip lashing, while Wagiya kept Acros Lake winless in a 3-zip affair. Checking-in on the female football competition currently in session by the B.P.F.L. week saw B.F.F.A. double Lake I 2 to 1, Emmanuel prevailed over Pomona Hidden Treasures 4-3 and Griga Ambassadors edge Gentle Touch 1-zip.

Turning to the Special Olympics scene, a group of seven athletes represented Belize in the first Central American Games for students with disabilities over the weekend nine gold medals, two silver and a bronze. Receiving gold was Christine Rhaburn in the one hundred metres and the softball throw. Paulita Cawich also took gold in the two hundred metres and the softball throw. Michael Graham took gold in the long jump and the one hundred metres, and Jamal Cherington took gold in the one hundred metre and silver in the softball throw. Annalee Bennett gold in the one hundred metres and bronze in the long jump. Andrew Alvarez gold in the sixty metres and Elton Colon silver in the one hundred metres. The athletes returned yesterday and we certainly want to give them maximum respect. Good show guys.

In basketball news, we caught up with the Burrel Boom competition Friday night which saw Fresh Pond Punisher step up to face Slaughterers. And it?s Lloyd Crawford wheeling and dealing in heavy traffic as the Punishers begin to pull away in the third quarter.

At the other end Rudolph Thompson finds Andrew Kerr who got three points for Slaughterers. He would lead his team with eleven points.

On the next possession Kerr displays more of his talent with this slick move, but it would not be enough.

Einsworth Tzul wants three and he gets for the Punishers. But this is the man who really hurt Slaughterers; David Jones would strike for the game high of twenty-two points as Fresh Pond punishes Slaughterers 51-43.

In other basketball news, week one of the over thirty-five basketball competition at Big Birds Isle saw Faya Haat Carnation beat Belmopan Bandits 49 to 40, Albert rolled over Early Risers Wheels 67 to 43 and Bulls stopped Kulture 57 to 45. This Saturday finds Bandits faces Wheels, while Carnation tackles Home Builders and Bulls will come out to play against Albert.

Finally folks in cycling news, a special general meeting is being called by the Belize City Association for Monday October sixth at seven p.m. at the National Sports Council. Hey if you are in the cycling business this particular session is a most. Be there or be square.

That is it for now though. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah, over all I am James Adderley.
