Smart launches new wireless internet service
While B.T.L. is bogged down in controversy, its upstart competitor, Smart, continues to make its mark on the telecommunications scene. This afternoon at its showroom on the Northern Highway, the company launched its mobile wireless internet service: SmartNet, which they say will make the internet fast, easy, and affordable for all Belizeans. C.E.O. Eduardo Santiago told us how it works.
Eduardo Santiago, C.E.O., SMART
?If you wanted to connect to the internet you had to have a fix line, you had to have a cable TV connection, you had to pay for the monthly rentals of the units. In this case, most of our costumers already have a phone; all they need to do sign up, buy a cable and out they go.?
?With a fixed cell phone you can have both a regular telephone connected to that and you can receive and make calls. You can also send S.M.S. and receive S.M.S. In addition to that, you can connect to the internet. You have two connections, one for the phone and one for the computer. That?s one basic unit that we do sell as a package with or without voice service.?
?Then we have any of our phones that are data capable, simply with a cable or wireless Bluetooth connection they can connect to any laptop of desktop connection and then they can connect to the internet.?
?Then last but not least, we have the P.C.card, which is just a P.C.I.M. card, similar to a WIFI card in which you just slide in the slot P.C.I.M. slot and you connect to the internet and that?s another mechanism which we can provide internet to the customers.?
The internet service is available for both prepaid and post-paid customers. For more information and pricing you can visit the company’s website at www.smart-bz.com or call 280-1010. Also at today’s launch, Santiago handed over fixed wireless phones to the Fire Department and BERT. The equipment comes with interconnection to the company’s system and will enable SMART customers to access the emergency services free of charge.
