New police station opened in Placencia

Story PictureThe Placencia peninsula is feeling a little safer tonight following official opening ceremonies for a new police station in the village. Commissioner Gerald Westby, area representative Rodwell Ferguson and Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs Ismael Cal had the ribbon cutting honours this morning. The lower flat of the building includes an office, two holding cells and a reception area while the upper floor will house the resident Police Sergeant. That officer will be assisted in his duties by a tourism police officer, two constables and several special constables from the area. During today’s ceremony, members of the business community also donated two thousand three hundred dollars to be used to repair the Ford Ranger pickup truck that will be stationed on the peninsula. The new Placencia Police Station building was built at a cost of a hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Placencia is renown as the second growing tourist destination in the country but there was only one officer stationed in the village. That meant that in times of emergency, residents were forced to rely on officers from Seine Bight or Mango Creek. Hopefully the larger contingent of cops will change the status quo of service.
