Sports Monday highlights with Guru James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports.

The age old rivalry between Belize Telemedia and Mirage Lady Rebels produced another monster showdown Friday night inside Rogers Stadium as both teams came out determined to grab the #1 seeding for the upcoming playoffs. It’s Barbara Cadle who gets B.T.L. going when she smocks Tanisha Jones for the long single shot that brings Lydia Cacho home. Veteran power puncher Ruth Lamb comes up next and she gets this ball out of the infield to see the pitcher Mary Flowers scored from 2nd base despite disregarding the stop sign from the 3rd base coach. And at the end of tow B.T.L. leads by 2. In the meantime Mary Flowers gets good help defensively when Sharette Vernon crushes this ball to 3rd base and Nerecia Frazier handles it for the double play. Its B.T.L. not giving up a run as Flowers ails through the inning with plays like these. Nerecia Frazier with the stop at 3rd and then she bounces this ball to Ruth Lamb who digs it out at 1st base for the out. Add another run for B.T.L. in the 5th when Nerecia hit is misplayed by the Rebels shortstop so Elaine Humes makes them pay. With 2 on Miss Ruth Lamb hits the ball to the shortstop – it should have been a routine out at 3rd instead she misfires allowing Nerecia to bring in the run all the way from 2nd.

At the end of 5 innings B.T.L. boast a commanding 4-zip lead. Poor defense by Elaine Humes allows their 1st run to score for Mirage Lady Rebels and it could have more had not left fielder come up with an impressive catch to keep it at 4-1 in the 6th. In the bottom of the 6th Elaine Humes makes amends for her error in the 5th when she truly smashes Tanisha Jones to make it possible for Earline Belisle to score all the way from 1st for the 5-1 B.T.L. lead. In the top of the 7th Mary Flowers struggles somewhat. The bases are loaded when Marsha Cassassola hits her hard allowing a run to score off the forced out at 1st. The next batter to face Flowers is Sharette Vernon and she punches it through the middle as 2 more runs come in for the 5-4 score. In trouble Flowers gives up this pitch which is tagged hard by Lisa Jones but center fielder Lydia Cacho comes with a wonderful catch to end the ballgame with a 5-4 big W for Telemedia.

Finally in basketball news the I.B.L. finalists emerged on Friday at Birds Isle and in the opener Sir Belikin took aim at the defending champion Tuff E Nuff. Immediately Tyrone Edwards of Tuff E Nuff goes to work sinking this long three and would strike for 14 points tonight. For Sir Belikin the give and go works as Steven Williams returns the pill to Daniel Nolberto who gets 2 of his 13 points with the layup. Belikin then finds this go to player Keith “Superman” Acosta who would not disappoint with a humongous 2 doubles of 31 points 19 rebounds to lead all players in both categories. At the end of the 1st Belikin lead 17 to 10. In the 2nd Jamal Kelly gets busy hitting the floater he would hit 4 of 6 from field and would finish with 15 points. Late in the quarter Ashton Edwards come up with this loose ball and sinks the triple and would total 17 points to lead his team. Raul Roches then shows the soft touch for 2 of his 7 points – but more importantly he gives Tuff E Nuff a 2 point lead at the half. In the 3rd its all Tuff E Nuff – Winston Pratt comes up with the rebound and the put back is good. Tyrone Edwards deals to Densmore Edwards and the triple is automatic. Farron Lauriano finds this loose and the slam follows. Aston Edwards wants three Ashton Edwards gets three. At the end of the three the defending champ leads 71 to 56. In the 4th Sir Belikin mounts a charge. The long pass finds Jarell Velasquez and he deliver. Dorian Jones comes alive and he strikes for 2 of his 17 game points. Superman Acosta then hammers this message home. Daniel Nolberto makes it a 1 point deficit for Belikin by sinking 2 big free throws. The final play of the ballgame finds Belikin down by 2. The long inbound pass fires Steven Williams and his Hail Mary misses badly. Tuff E Nuff wins with 84-82 squeaker.
