B.D.F. leads formulation of long-term security strategy

Story PictureIt’s called Belize: 2021 and though it may sound like the name of a new movie, it’s actually the government’s fifteen year vision for the nation’s security. And while it is not the kind of initiative to happen overnight, that hasn’t stopped the Belize Defence Force and other agencies from pushing forward. In the second meeting of the National Security Strategy Formulation Process held at the Belize Biltmore Plaza this morning, technocrats gathered to further explore just how they can help improve the lives of Belizeans.

Colonel Bernard Griffard, Professor, U.S. Army War College
?In June, we gathered together to discuss where Belize wants to go. The Prime Minister gave us great guidance and his vision and this time we are now coming together looking at how to get there. We are looking at fifteen years from now, 2021. So this gives us some room to try to get real policies and long term programmes that will get us to the objectives that have been outlined. Such as the security of the country, sovereignty, better education, better social programmes, in other words a better life for Belizeans as a whole. What we will do, we?ll take those objectives and sit down over the next three days and look at the concepts necessary to achieve those objectives. That?s easy; because we will say just say how you do this. Then we look down at the resources available to do this. That makes it harder.?

The strategy formulation process is expected to include another seminar in November.
