Police and Yabra citizens share regional award

Story PictureWhile certainty often proves elusive in solving crimes there were no doubts today about giving praise to an effort involving the Belize Police Department.

Jacqueline Godwin, Reporting
Today, international telecommunications giant Motorola awarded the Belize Police Department and the Yabra Community Development Committee for its work to prevent crime and improve the quality of community life. The Y.C.D.C. project captured first place in the company?s annual award programme that promotes community policing. The project was presented in May at a meeting of the Association of Caribbean Police Commissioners in Aruba.

John Magee, Motorola Representative
?But we wanted to understand that you people here in Belize made this project happen. So decided that we wanted to come to you to and again show you and thank you for your participation. But also to recognize the project in your community.?

?Over and over again we have witnessed a transformation of communities as a result of community policing initiatives, and people?s lives have been forever changed as a result of these programmes.?

The ceremony was not only about the handing over of plaques as the recognition also brings some much needed assistance to the Y.C.D.C. project which operates on donations and fund raising efforts.

Elizabeth Longsworth, Chairperson, Y.C.D.C. Project
?We really appreciate it. That motivates us to work harder, because we know that somebody out there is listening. So we really appreciate this today. I feel good about it.?

?They say they are going to assist us with whatever equipments or whatever we need to make this dream a reality in this community. Because we have a lot of high school people who don?t have computers and they need to do assignments, homework, projects, etc. If we have that I could learn to do computer because I don?t know anything about it, but I would definitely embrace it. ?

The ceremony took place at the Yabra Community Centre recently opened at the corner of Queen Charlotte Street and Faber?s Road.
