Teacher found murdered in San Ignacio home
A teacher from the Cayo district has been found dead in his home, the victim of an apparent crime of passion. According to San Ignacio police, on Thursday afternoon, concerned neighbours asked them to check on forty-five year old Timothy Matheny because they hadn’t seen him for several days. Cops say when they got into Mathney’s house on Joseph Andrews Drive, they found his nude body lying on the bed. Based on the state of decomposition, authorities suspect that Matheny may have been dead as long as two days. Initial investigations have determined that Matheny had been stabbed twice to the left side of the chest. We understand tonight that Matheny was last seen alive around nine on Tuesday night in the company of a still unidentified man. We understand that man is tonight in police custody. Reports to News Five indicate that the detainee is also being investigated for another murder that occurred in early 2001 in the Cahal Pech area of another American man who was also found dead with two stab wounds to the heart. Matheny had been teaching at the Mount Carmel High School in Benque Viejo for the past eight years. If you have any information that may assist the authorities, please contact the nearest station.
