A.G. brokers peace b/w D.P.P. and Police …
After refusing to comment on severed ties, tonight word out of Belmopan is that the Attorney General has had to step in and patch up things between the Office of the Director Public Prosecutions and the Police Department. A government press release this afternoon, says that following a conversation between A.G. Francis Fonseca and Kirk Anderson, the D.P.P. has “directed his office to resume full contact and cooperation with the Belize Police Department”. The release also hints that Anderson might cut his vacation short as “a meeting has been convened for next week by the Prime Minister with all the relevant parties to discuss issues of concern and to ensure that the shared objectives of combating crime and violence and upholding the rule of law continue to be met through a strong and effective partnership between the Office of the D.P.P. and the Belize Police Department”. Before leaving the country earlier this week, Anderson had indicated that some four hundred police files were to be ignored by his staff because police investigators had repeatedly failed to comply with his recommendations regarding charges against accused persons. We understand that now, “all criminal files pending advice and directives from the office of the D.P.P. will continue to be dealt with in a timely and professional manner and there will be no additional delays in the administration of justice”.
