Burn victim recovers from ordeal
Earlier this year we featured the sad story of a freak accident in southern Belize that almost claimed the life of a little boy. Darwin Cruz was badly burned by a gasoline explosion after he combined the fuel and sawdust to destroy an ant’s nest. But tonight we are happy to report that with the help of some very special people, Darwin has another shot at life.
Darwin Cruz, Recovering Burn Victim
?I would like to say a million thanks to everyone who helped me, everyone.?
Janelle Chanona, Reporting
When we first met ten year old Darwin Cruz in March, he was on life support, fighting to survive third degree burns to much of his body.
But through the efforts of the Rotary Club, Darwin was rushed by air ambulance to Shriners Hospital in Galveston, Texas.
Adan Cruz, Grandfather
?I am happy with the treatment and service they gave us in the United States. And I am very thankful to the newspapers, radio and television stations. And to all the Churches, the businesses, and everything that was made possible with the help I received to go the United States, because if we didn?t, my son would be dead. There are some things that he can?t and will never be able to do. He can not lift anything over five pounds and the doctors haven?t told me if he will ever be able to do it, but I hope that he will be able to.?
Earlier this month, Darwin returned to Belize and although full recovery is still in the distant future, the terrible experience has not destroyed the little boy.

?He plays ball. He is a normal kid and is able to play many different games.?

?Toys.?
Alyssa Noble, Reporting
?Like what kind of toys??
Darwin Cruz
?Toy cars.?
But Darwin has learnt an important lesson.

?There are some things that are dangerous. That are inflammable like gasoline, Baygon spray, stoves, cans, cables … all those things, they are bad.?
Darwin and his grandfather will need to return to the United States for additional medical treatment on November twelfth. If you would like to help Darwin Cruz, please contact Yvette Burks at 223-3292.
