Council of Churches not part of gender policy protests

While the protest was taking place in San Ignacio, this morning we spoke to Bishop Phillip Wright of the Council of Churches to find out if the church was part of the movement.  Bishop Wright said that while the Churches share similar concerns, the Council is of the opinion that the protests are not the best way to express reservations against the Revised Gender Policy 2013. He says that the church will not condone any action that will put at risk the life of any person.

“I’ve never said to any of my members, “Don’t go and march…” because I think the demonstration, the parade is a part of how the people may express their discontent and they have a right to. I think what you are seeing from the Council of Churches in terms of the heads of churches that have met, we are saying that that is one way, but not the only way and there is another way to approach the issue hopefully with the same outcome in the end…and that is a document and something for our nation that will move us forward as well.  You can’t speak of the sanctity of life and in any way support harming somebody. So take it from me, the church will never be a part of supporting any action that will put at risk the lives of any fellow human being.”
