S.S.B. awards $250,000 in scholarships
A total of twenty-eight students from all over the country have been chosen to receive high school, sixth form, and university scholarships from the Belize Social Security Board. The recipients, who were chosen based on financial need, academic performance and successful entry to the institution of their choice, received their awards at a ceremony held yesterday at the George Price Centre in Belmopan. While the SSB has traditionally sponsored high school and sixth form scholarships, this is the first year that the programme has been extended to bachelor’s degrees. The two year scholarships, valued at twenty thousand dollars each, were awarded to six students: Patricia Robateau Perez, Shamica Ramos, Celso Cawich, Elmar Requeña, Melicia McKenzie and Abner Novelo. These are an addition to the sponsoring of seventeen students for sixth form study and fifteen others for high school, bringing the total value of this year’s awards to two hundred and fifty-six thousand dollars. To date, the Social Security Board has funded one hundred and thirty scholarships.
