Jury hung in carnal knowledge case

A case of carnal knowledge has ended in the Belize City Supreme Court with a hung jury. Around eleven-thirty this morning a jury of five women and four men began their deliberation in the case of thirty-five year old Michael Woods. But when they returned from the jury room some three hours later, it was with the news that they could not come to an agreement on a verdict. According to Justice Troadio Gonzalez, it is now up to the D.P.P. to determine whether Woods will be retried. Woods is accused of having sex with a fourteen year old girl on two separate occasions in 2005. During trial, Woods, acting in his own defence, called on the victim’s mother and brother to testify on his behalf. Woods is currently serving a one-year sentence at the Hattieville Prison for handling stolen goods.
