Rains slacken but flooding continues

Story PictureThe massive month long rains may have let up but flooding continues to be a problem for a number of low lying riverbank communities. According to the Hydrology Department, while the flow is slackening upstream, the water at Crooked Tree is still two feet over the causeway, the Sibun River at Freetown has overflowed its banks, the Rio Hondo is still flooding, as is the New River. This weekend parts of Toledo received about two inches of rain and communities such as Jordon, Santa Ana, and Blue Creek remain affected by high water. These photos taken on Sunday at Carmelita in the Orange Walk District indicate that the volume of water accumulating in northern watersheds is massive and it may be a few more days until residents of those flooded areas can return to their homes.
