James Adderley and the Weekend Sporting Highlights
Good Evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.
The long awaited election for the 1st national president of the Belize Cycling Association was staged at the UWI Open Campus on Saturday under the supervision of the National Olympic Committee. The association had been divided into northern, central, western and southern zones and each aspirant for the title of national president had to have won one of these zones. When the voting was over, Dion Leslie of the Central Zone had emerged the winner and is now tasked to unify the association and bring development to the sport of cycling in Belize. Orson Butler, Cordell Gordon and Daniel Cano were elected vice presidents while committee members include Sheena Castillo, Fitzgerald Joseph and Gilroy Spense. Here is the President Dion Leslie facing the media after his big win. We wish the new BCA the best in the future.
In other cycling news, the 8th annual Kulture Tours Cycling race was staged yesterday on a route that left Leslie’s Imports headed to Burrell Boom circuit, went on to the Northern Highway and swing back to finish at Garbutt’s Farm. Three categories were featured; the elites and juniors rode in an open class, the A&B class weekend riders competed as a unit and there was a C Class competition. And here is the start to the elite event. Before the race reached Hattieville, we found 2 riders suffering the effects of a spill. Henry Morriera seems to have gotten the worse of it and needed urgent assistance. While Dilon Abraham of Megabytes was also shook up and neither riders would continue. We do hope Morriera will have a speedy and full recovery. Folks, when the race arrives at Boom junction with the Northern Highway, we find a large group hugging the curve. Around Mile 38 on the northern highway, Donesetti Vasquez and Giovanni Choto have executed the breakaway. At mile 29, the two man race continues between Vasquez and Choto. It’s now money time and Giovanni Choto makes the 1st move; Donesetti Vasquez of Depredadores responds and overtakes the 2012 Cross Country Champion to come up with the big Win. Choto of Western Spirit has to settle for 2nd. Nissan Arana also of Depredadores rolls in unchallenged for 3rd place. Now here’s the sprint for 4th place and it’s Brandon Cattouse taking the field sprint. Meanwhile, the A & B weekend warriors class was taken by B rider, Isaiah Willacy of Digicell who beat our Beat Brunschwiller and Barney Brown in that order while Santino Castillo handily took the C Class ride.
In basketball news, the word coming out of the King James Project of Basketball, as far as the Belizean participants go, is very encouraging. Kachief Thomas formerly of Sadie Vernon Tech Belize and now a point guard at IOWA Western Community College in the U.S. was awarded 2nd Team All Region XI All Acedemic Team for maintaining a grade point average of over 3.0 and making a significant contribution to the success of his team. Devin Daly of St. John’s College, now a sophomore guard at Lake Superior State University was voted one of the three pre-season captains by his teammates. Just goes to show folks that dreams can come true with hard work and dedication and we wish these 2 Belizean student athletes the best in all their undertakings.
Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
