Commonwealth Youth Programme seeks volunteers

Story PictureSummer: it’s a time for fun, relaxation and, of course, vacation activities for young people, the latest of which comes courtesy of the Commonwealth Youth Programme. According to Alberto Vellos, the regional representative of the programme, they are looking for a few good men and women.

Alberto Vellos, Regional Youth Caucus Rep., Commonwealth Youth Prog.
?First of all, we want to gather a group of young Belizeans who will volunteer of their time this summer. Secondly, we want to renew the spirit of volunteerism in Belize and thirdly we want to create a support base for institutions which have a social cause. What we are setting up to do is establish a Volunteers ?R Us programme that will provide the opportunity to the young people to volunteer of their time. What we will do … from the volunteers we recruit, we will deploy them based on their capabilities and their skill; we will deploy them to different organisations, where they will carry out work for the next three weeks.?

?For a country whose population of people under thirty is seventy percent, I believe that the young people need to be more involved in the development in Belize. You have a lot of organisations that are set back because they have insufficient human resources, they don?t have the sufficient man power. Well through this programme we hope that young people can get involved and be a part of the development process of the different organisations and in all Belize.?

Some of the organisations Volunteers ‘R Us will be working with include the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, Belize Council for the Visually Impaired, Fire Department and National Aids Commission. While the programme is open to anyone under thirty years of age, students on summer holidays are especially encouraged to volunteer. If you are interested please contact Alberto Vellos at phone number 605-1371.
