National university launches institutional curriculum review

Cynthia Thompson

The University of Belize today launched an institutional curriculum review, a process identified by President Cary Fraser as designed to establish a continuous program of academic reviews that will assist in improving the quality of the university’s academic program.  The presentation was held this morning at the Radisson.  Assistant Provost, Dr. Cynthia Thompson spoke of the curriculum review and its place within the CARICOM Single Market & Economy framework.

“We want to embark on a system where through the entire process, we are leading towards accreditation. At this moment the university is not accredited to any, with, by any formal body. And we want to build and lead the university towards that process. As we are going along, we know that if we are waiting until ten years down the road, we will say okay; ten years time we will be accredited. But there are ways in the accreditation process to begin to accredit programs and then to begin to accredit faculties and so and so on. And so we have organizations within businesses that accredit particular programs; organizations within education that accredit particular programs. We want to being to build on each of these areas so that in the long run, we will be able to come out with an institution where its programs will be recognized and accredited not only regionally, but internationally.”

The review process commenced in August 2012 and included faculty consultations, as well as studies of past programs.
