Hands of Mercy Charity Foundation gives school supplies to needy children

Some four hundred and fifty less fortunate primary school students from across the Belize District received some much needed school supplies courtesy of the Hands of Mercy Charity Foundation. Designed to assist marginalized children with school supplies, the N.G.O. has helped hundreds of students from ten various primary schools from south side Belize City, Hattieville and Ladyville. The donation includes books and school bags and they were distributed today at the St. Martin De Porres Primary School. News Five spoke with founder and executive director, Moses Sulph about the donation.

“How do we get our stuff? Basically we solicit from the public. I must say that I don’t want to beat down the corporate sector, but I think that the corporate sector of Belize has got to do more to assist when it comes to things like education. I understand that many times they are caught up considering entertainment event, but these are actually things to assist kids in going back to school. And I can’t reiterate enough; if you have a country with a hundred and forty-four thousand persons living in poverty and you have a twenty-four percent unemployment rate, then you are going to have people who are in need.  I started this when I was at COLA because I saw the needs of people and I saw the need in the country so I decided that I wanted to personally get involved in trying to see what we can directly give what we can. Also this is our third year; the second year as Hands of Mercy. And basically, I am happy also that we have been able to inspire other organizations to try and do things of these sorts. There are people here who didn’t leave happy because we had only a hundred and twenty-five bags and there were over four hundred people here; but we can only give what we get. So we are asking next year for companies…I wrote the letters from April, from January; that is like six months. So I am hoping that the companies will be more receptive this year and try and see how they can follow through. I really want to thank those who have donated; I cannot thank them enough. And without this, this would have never been possible.”
