Cayo commentators call World Cup games in Germany

Story PictureThis weekend, millions of football fans from around the world will stop whatever they’re doing to watch the final games of World Cup 2006. And though many of us have watched live coverage of the matches courtesy of American commentators on ESPN or GolTV, there are three Belizeans calling the games from the press box in Germany. Saul Barrera, his fourteen year old son Ricardo and Javier Langer have been stationed in Munich since the World Cup started in June, putting together daily thirty minute video of highlights, player profiles and scenes from the German stadiums. The complete package is then sent via the internet to Barrera’s co-workers in Cayo to be broadcast on Channel three in San Ignacio and Santa Elena. According to Barrera, he applied to FIFA last year following his coverage of the Gold Cup football tournament in the U.S. and is already planning to be in South Africa for World Cup 2010. On Saturday Germany and Portugal will compete for third place while France and Italy will go head to head on Sunday afternoon to see who will be the next kings of football.
