Linda Lewis provides high school scholarship

Story PictureIn the 1970’s her name was a household word as one of the golden girls of Belizean women’s softball. Today, while the blazing speed of Linda Lewis’s fastball may have slowed, her instincts have remained as sharp as ever.

Only one student was chosen from among the many applicants who competed for the first ever Linda Lewis high school scholarship.

Nellie Trench, Executive Director, National Sports Council
?We were approached by Mrs. Babb, the Hall of Fame, Linda Lewis Brown wanted to do a Sports Scholarship for a primary school child who has participated in the primary school sports programme. As Ms. Babb came to us, right away, we jumped on that initiative and right away we set out criteria. We sent the different forms to the schools. All they had to do was send a copy of their P.S.E. results, they had to bring in their acceptance letter from the high school, they wrote an essay, a two hundred and fifty word essay explaining the importance of sports in the national primary school curriculum and how sports has impacted their personal development.?

An ecstatic Kira Arnold, graduate of St. John Vianney Primary School, is the lucky recipient of the scholarship.

Kira Arnold, Scholarship Recipient
?I feel excited and grateful for this scholarship because its some weight off my mother?s back and it?ll really help her a lot. And my choice of high school is Edward P. Yorke because their academic is wonderful.?

According to Carol Babb, Sister of the Hall of Famer, Linda wants the younger generation of Belize to appreciate the splendour of softball.

?Linda really likes softball and she travelled a lot and she got a lot of exposure due to softball. And she thinks that softball is a healthy way for youngsters to spend their spare time. And she would like to see the sport of softball improve and go further and she hopes that one of these days, that the girls will get the experience that she got to be a golden girl. And she also wants to give a scholarship to award some deserving girl to continue softball and also to study at the same time.?

After Kira Arnold has completed her four years of high school, Linda Lewis hopes to award another deserving student with a similar scholarship. The Ministry of Education has also contributed six high school tuition scholarships to primary school students active in sports.
