Felicia Chen, the mother who drowned her 3 children, remanded to Central Prison
The woman accused of murdering her three small children in April appeared in Magistrate’s Court this morning. Twenty-two year old Felicia Chen allegedly drowned four year old Triana Teul, three year old Thomas Teul and one year old Trinaya Teul in the sea near Belizean Beach in April twenty seventh. She reportedly attempted to do the same to six year old Trina, who escaped and ran for help. Chen was read the three charges in April, but was then sent for a psychiatric evaluation since the court determined that she was possibly a danger to herself. Since then, Chen has been a guest at the psychiatric ward in Belmopan, awaiting a report from the psychiatrist to determine her readiness to stand trial. That report was late in coming, since until recently the Ministry of Health did not have a psychiatrist on staff. But it was done after psychiatrist Dr. Wesley Quimbo was signed on by G.O.B. and evaluated Chen. News Five was reliably informed that Quimbo’s report declared Chen fit to stand trial and fit to be released from the psychiatric ward. Today the Police went through what has become their usual routine of shielding Chen from the media and from public scrutiny. She appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann Marie Smith with her attorney Antoinette Moore at just before eleven this morning. The D.P.P.’s office requested at the onset that the trial be held en camera, so the room was cleared. News Five understands that the doctor’s report was given on the record today, at which point the attorneys agreed with the court on an adjournment date. A warrant was signed for Chen and she was taken to Belize Central Prison, where she will spend her first night behind bars. She is scheduled to reappear in Court on November eighth.
