Hyde says P.U.P. must unite, return to roots

Story PictureMinister of Defence, Youth and Sports, Cordel Hyde, was an enthusiastic guest at today’s ceremony … but he is less certain when it comes to his government’s future direction. According to Hyde, his party needs to put its differences aside and focus on the important things in life.

Cordel Hyde, Minister of Defence, Youths and Sports
?The challenge for us is really to ensure that as much of our resources as possible is spent on our children. Because we spent too much money in areas, that now you look back and say weren?t really needed. So it?s for us to ensure that whatever resources we have now, we make sure that it?s spent in the right direction. And when you spend money on your kids, you are spending on the future and you can?t go wrong that way.?

Janelle Chanona, Reporting
?Slightly switching gears here, politically speaking you?ve never lost an election, I know you are still a member of the People?s United Party, what does the P.U.P. need to do to win the next election? What would you recommend as strategy to the campaign manager??

Cordel Hyde
?Well we need to get back to basics. We need to get back to the people and I think we haven?t done that nearly enough. I think you have to abandon the policies of old that put you in this position in the first place, and you have to embrace the people more and work more along with them. This People?s United Party was built on social justice, it was all about that, it was about the smaller man on the street and having a genuine deep relationship with them. I think we?ve lost that over the years and we have to get back to that. That?s a long hard road, it?s not an easy journey but I think we have to start somewhere or else we are looking at a very challenging time in the general elections.?

Janelle Chanona
?Some people might look at that challenge and say its leading some P.U.P. generals to say well every man for himself, elect me not because I?m a PUP but because it?s me.?

Cordel Hyde
?If you go that route, then its sure failure. Because I think we have to find a way to do it together. You?ll never have a party that?s filled with all the same people, with all the same ideas and with all the same desires. It?s a healthy thing, a vibrant thing to have a party that?s diverse, and that is what we have. We have different people pulling in different directions and I don?t think that?s a bad thing. But I think at the end of the day we have to reach a point where we reach some level of compromise and consensus. And we have to do that pretty quickly or else we?re all going to be in trouble.?
