Anthea Sutherland tops M & M cycling tour

Story PictureGood evening. I?m James Adderley welcoming you to this edition of Sports Monday. The M & M Female Cycle Tour concluded over the weekend, and these are the early morning sights and sounds that precede the start of this big event.

Unfortunately the long morning rain has become a factor in stage one of the event. It?s a twelve mile ride to mile six and back to Leslie?s Imports all on the Western Highway.

And yes, Marinet Flowers the show must go on, so she heads, off on the individual time trial event in the down pour.

But it Anthea Sutherland winning this stage in all the turbulence of the early morning down pour.

Now let?s head to the start of the forty mile second stage presented on Saturday. All seven elite female cyclists are off.

So we fast forward to the finish line, and the sprint is on. Watch Gina Lovell beat Alicia Thompson and Marinet Flowers in that order to take the stage.

This brings us to the forty-five mile finals stage on Sunday, and at the starting line its Gina Lovell wearing the Sprinters Jersey, a jersey she would eventually get to keep.

Of course today?s win will factor into the overall winner, but it?s Gabrielle Lovell grabbing this stage by forcing Anthea Sutherland into second and Marinet Flowers into third.

However, after the tabulating the results of the three stages, the win goes to Anthea Sutherland who totalled 4 hours 56 minutes and 8 seconds the best in the business. She beat out Gina Lovell by mere twelve seconds but it certainly was enough; Alicia Thompson takes third in 4 hours 56 minutes and 32 seconds. Marinet Flowers fourth while Sandra Ballesteros rounds out the top five. Gina Lovell not only took the sprint title in this M & M tour people, but she also walked away with the Queen of the Hills award. We say congratulations to all.

Anthea Sutherland, Winner
?I went out there with one mind to win. It is a do or die situation. It rained a lot and lot of water was on the road but I said whatever; I will just give it my best for the first day.?

James Adderley
?The help you got from your crew??

Anthea Sutherland
?The help I got from my crew was just go all the way. My coach Mr. Bowman told me what to do and I did it. Maintain an average speed, and on the second day to get the points them so that I could keep my seconds them up. I came in fourth but I still did something good on that day. On Sunday, that?s when my team and myself worked very hard for what we did.?

James Adderley
?Wasn?t it scary to beat your nearest challenger, Gina Lovell, by a mere twelve second??

Anthea Sutherland
?Actually I wasn?t thinking about it. I just went out there with one mind. Do my best and what happen, happen. I did my best and I succeeded.?

Alicia Thompson, 3rd Place Winner
?Well the outcome of the race was exactly how we wanted it to be. A B.T.L. Swoosh member on top. The role of us as team members was to make sure that Gina did not gain any seconds and have Anthea gain seconds. So Anthea could come out on top. We did that and here we have her with us being the champ.?

James Adderley
?And when is Alicia Thompson going to break into the big time??

Alicia Thompson
?That is a question asked by many. I have tried but I guess I need to try harder. Especially, coming unto the finishing of races and having that burst to get that overall sprint. I wouldn?t say it is a weakness but it is something I need to work on.?

Fiona Humes, 6th Place Winner
?I am the newest member of B.T.L. Swoosh, and I know that I will definitely complement them. They are a strong team and I am here to make them a dominant team and our goal was to go out there and win.?

James Adderley
?And what about Fiona the individual? You have your fans and your expectations.?

Fiona Humes
?I have my fans and my expectations, but next year look out for me as a part of Swooshy.?

Checking the Billiards scene, the fifth Mike?s Club Carom Tournament staged in conjunction with Joseph and Taylor, this year reached money time Friday night. And here?s Larry Lisbey in action against Andrew ?Papa? Brown for this year?s title, and he gets his ball to connect with the red and the other white to make a point.

However, he leaves an easy play for Papa Brown, who is able to control the three balls for four straight points.

Both these players are rated at 110, but for Lisbey he needs a streak of twenty straight points to grab the win right here. He misses the easy shot for a man who in this tournament had made twenty-nine straight points. Papa Brown comes to the table and he makes one shot and then the other, which brings his total to 110 points. Lisbey is stalled at 85. Brown wins the 2006 Carom title and we say congratulations.

Meanwhile, Manuel Ramos out duelled Alex ?Camel? Haylock in the battle for third place.

On Friday El Paso visits Mike?s, and Lion King goes to Copa.

Turning to the Volleyball scene, the 2006 amateur season concluded all three categories of play at the City Centre over the weekend. We join the female championship best of five with B. H. Stars taking a two game lead into the fourth set over Jaguars, who get a much needed point on this smash from Sherilee Thurnton.

It?s desperation time for the Jaguars who survive this smash from Kimberly William. Thurnton can?t come up with the point for them. Lupita Quan then sets up her partner-?Jaguars fail to clear?B. H. Stars post the fourth set big w to grab the title and win their twelfth female championship in a row and if you don?t believe that?s big then something certainly wrong with you.

In the forms category, here?s the finish to the rubber match of this three game championship series and it?s Lighthouse with a 14-13 lead over FirstCaribbean Bank. Defence fails the bank as Lighthouse takes the championship 25-12, 14-25, and 15-13.

Meanwhile folks here is the finish to the male finals, Brian Sabal sets table for Larry Bennet. The Scorpions simply can?t dig it out people. S.Q. Dragons post the 21-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-21, four set win to take the title for its third year in a row. Congratulations certainly are in order.
