Employing a pair of immigrants without valid permits can land you before the court

Bing Chen

Chinese national, twenty-three year-old Jing Mao Tan, proprietor of Lucky King Noodles Factory, was arraigned in the magistrates’ court this morning after being busted for employing a pair of immigrants without valid work permits.  On Wednesday, the businessman was arrested by a team of immigration officers when it was discovered that he unlawfully hired Honduran nationals Francisco Verde and Jose Gutierrez.  On Thursday, Tan appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer.  But, upon learning that Tan did not understand the charges being read to him the matter was adjourned until he was able to get an interpreter.  He was offered bail in the sum of three thousand dollars.  In court today, Tan was fined two thousand dollars after pleading guilty to two counts of employing persons not in possession of a valid work permit.  That fine must be paid by October fifteenth.  In default of payment Tan will serve six months for each count.
