Woman asks magistrate for jail time, not fine
A woman convicted of breaking a car’s windshield today asked a magistrate to forget about any fine and just send her to jail. Twenty-one year old Merlene Clarke of Ladyville was charged with damage to property following an incident on June eleventh at Mitchel Estate. She had apparently been drinking and fighting and at some point took out her excess anger on a vehicle belonging to Keisha Young. While the offence would normally rate a moderate fine along with a stern reprimand, Clarke made it clear to Magistrate Margaret Gabb that she preferred to just do the time. Gabb obliged her with a sentence of nine months in Hattieville Prison. At the trial it also came out that Clarke still owed the court money from a fine for a previous offence.
