Robbery suspect shot and wounded by police

Two men remain in police custody tonight after authorities in Dangriga foiled an attempted robbery on Tuesday night. According to investigators, a mobile patrol travelling on Ecumenical Drive was alerted to a robbery in progress at the Holiday Store. When the cops pulled up, they saw one man fighting with the shop owner while his accomplice looked on. When the duo spotted the police, they took off running, heading towards Stanley Drive. The men separated and police report that during the chase, one of the suspects turned around, said something and raised an object. One of the cops responded by opening fire and hit his target, wounding him in the cheek. That man was immediately detained and within hours, his alleged partner in crime was also in custody. Authorities have not released the details of their identity but we understand that in May, one of the accused had been arrested after he was caught lurking in the vicinity of the same store armed with a large knife. That case is still pending. Today, officers returned to the scene to collect more evidence and take statements from witnesses. Proprietor of the store, Jian Xuan Huang reported that he was behind the counter when two men, one armed with a gun, walked up and demanded money. He decided to put up a fight and that was when the police arrived. Nothing was stolen during the assault. The injured suspect remains under police guard at the Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga.
