N.T.U.C.B. threatens to expel CWU from the Congress
The stevedores want the executive removed, and so does the N.T.U.C.B. That entity has sent a stern and final warning to the C.W.U. That warning is clear – if the C.W.U. fails to convene a congress on October twenty-sixth, it will be immediately expelled from the Congress. The N.T.U.C.B. release states that it can no longer tolerate the representation the C.W.U. purports to be making for its units, knowing that the C.W.U. is not fulfilling its legal obligations. According to Marvin Mora, their backs are against the wall because it is their responsibility to protect workers, and the C.W.U. executive is doing them a disservice.
Marvin Mora, 2nd Vice President, N.T.U.C.B.
“So far the N.T.U.C.B. has not received any of those and they have not complied so by virtue of that fact, the N.T.U.C.B. is looking at expelling them all together. That would be possible if they decide to continue with this sort of attitude and not try to work with the N.T.U.C.B.”

“But is it a matter of them being hostile or is it a matter of them just not providing information; has there been any attempt at communication?”
Marvin Mora
“Yes we had called; the general secretary had made a call to the president who is Antonio Gonzalez explaining to him that we have not received the information with some auditor reports and Antonio explained to her that he cannot allow our auditor to go in there and verify the information. And our auditor was told that he cannot come in; he has no authority. And that is when the N.T.U.C.B. decided in the last meeting that we had to do something drastic about it because it has reached to the point where some of their memberships are claiming foul play. We see that there are missing certain requirements to even be a union at this time and because the N.T.U.C.B.’s main objective is to protect workers, we cannot work with a group that is hell-bent into trying to continue in this modus operandi.”

“What happens next and maybe you could tell us what could be the repercussions to the CWU if they are expelled from the N.T.U.C.B.?”
Marvin Mora
“The repercussions really would harm their bargaining units which are many as we understand—more than it would harm the current executive. And that is why we are appealing through that press release to their memberships so that their memberships see it in themselves to take ownership and responsibility and address the matters that they have in front of them. Because if they do not meet the requirements as a trade union, they can be decertified and that would probably result in some serious industrial relation issues with the current collective bargainings that they have.”
According to Mora, the N.T.U.C.B. has no clue as to the motive for the C.W.U. executive’s refusal to keep its commitments.
