New Site Erei takes R.F.G. Cup
Good evening. I?m James Adderley and we welcome you to this edition of Sports Monday. Game two of the R.F.G. Trophy Tournament Championship Series took us to scenic San Ignacio yesterday where undefeated New Site Erei of Dangriga was hosted by Hankook Verdes inside the Norman Broaster Stadium.
For starters folks we must congratulate the Cayo fans who came out in droves to support the home team. Yes, Cayo still has that community spirit and we just love it people.
Turning the play on the field, the veteran Earl Peters looks to give his team the early lead with this left foot offering but Woodrow West takes care of business.
The home team keeps pressing the pace with this centre into the danger zone that forces West to intervene.
New Site finally gets something going when Darwin Castillo gets off this shot inside the box but it?s a high riser.
At the other end Stanly Rice Robinson sets table perfectly for Marlon Mesa who rushes this shot.
Folks you be the judge, Harrison Kafu Roaches is beaten to this ball by Cayo keeper, Jaime Brooks who looses possession–referee Jones rules offside?I?m not too certain but the man with the whistle, he rules of course.
Dangriga then attacks off this set piece but Elroy Kuylen?s shot is contained by Brooks.
Indeed the Verdes team gets two looks at goal on this play but can capitalize on neither one.
Meanwhile, Lennox Castillo finally gets himself into scoring position only to be foiled by goalkeeper Brooks and after the forty-five minutes of football the scoreboard has not moved an inch.
As we go into second half this clash between Norman ?Tilliman? Nunez and Jamie Brooks leaves the Cayo keeper unable to continue in the ballgame, so in comes Shandi Wagner in replacement and immediately he is tested by Norman Nunez, whose left foot punch screams dangerously across the goal mouth.
Folks Darwin Castillo does most of the hard work here for Griga, and they should have done better on this particular press.
Ryan Simpson then decides to test Wagner from long range and almost gets New Site on to the scoreboard.
Some seventy-five minutes into the ballgame Raymond Waters makes his presence felt. Question is who would the shower bless?
The answer comes ten minutes later, Lennox Castillo?s shot at goal rebounds to the ever dangerous Norman ?Tilliman? Nunez and the half valley gives New Site Erei a 1-zip lead.
Lennox Castillo now wants his goal but Wagner denies him from close range with a very fine save.
Nevertheless, the dagger finds Hankook Verdes at the eighty-seventh minute when Glenn Martinez connects of the far post as New Site Erei wins game two–2-zip to sweep the championship series for the R.F.G. Trophy. We say congratulations to New Site who have now won both B.P.F.L. A League titles in 2006 and that?s big.
Norman Nunez, Captain, New Site Erei
?I know this was good because this championship was a total hard effort and work by the players. We went through a lot of problems and when the players put on the uniform it seemed like the problems went away. Right now, I want the league to look at these players and know they did they?re and management owes these players a great sum of money. I want the committee to look at this problem. My players have done their job and they need their money. And I don?t want my players to be desperate when the season done.?
Question: ?Now Norman tell us about the game itself??
Norman Nunez
?The game is a championship game and it?s the game that I always wanted to play. This is the spot that I always wanted to reach and this is a moment that I love and that allows me to do the best job.?
In cycling news, Fitzgerald Joseph took the Cycling Association forty-two mile race Saturday for non-elite readers in 1 hour, 56 minutes and 19 seconds. Beating out Ernest Thurton, Warren Coye, Stephen Bisset and George Lovell Sr. in that order.
We also take this opportunity to remind you that the Mighty Father?s Day Cycle Classic comes up this Sunday, June eighteenth and it?s a biggie and you don?t want to miss it. Coming in as defending champion is Hugo Rostrain Monterosa of Guatemala, but this year he will be tested so stay tuned.
Checking the Belize City Guiness 8 Ball Pool Tournament on Friday, Triangle mashed MJ?s 8 to 2. Lion King smashed Shooters 6 to 4. Saturday saw Advance roll over Mike?s Club 8 to 12, while Shooters got a 10-zip score from a very tardy Catt?s Place.
This Thursday Advance takes on Catt?s Place at MJ?s while El Paso will visit Shooters.
On the Cricket scene, Brilliant of Crooked Tree beat up on Wicked 11 of Flowers Bank. Saturday 175 runs to 95, as Roy Milton hit for 55 runs, while Howell Gillett struck for 5 wickets.
Turning to the basketball scene, we caught up with semi-pro play-off action Friday night inside the City Centre as Belize Bank Bulldogs tried to stay off eliminations against the University of Belize. Even if you don?t believe it folks the first bucket of this ballgame comes from the slam dunk by Claude ?Too Tall? Jones.
Aubrey Lopez who would lead the Bulldogs with 14 points answers right back with this three pointer.
Now watch Darren Bovell take on the entire Bulldog defence to get 2 points. He would finish with 14 points.
Marcel Orosco then comes up with the loose ball and streaks all the way down court for 2 at the half. U.B. boast a 29-17 lead.
In the third quarter, the Bulldogs make a run. Eric Cheers Downlow gets 2. He would finish with 10 points but at the end of the quarter they?re still down by 12.
In the fourth, Jeff Clifton continues his dominance down low. U.B. goes on to post the 60-52 big w, eliminating the Belize Bank. U.B. now awaits the winner of the San Pedro-B.T.L. series. Game one of the series over the weekend was shut down by rain in the third quarter with San Pedro leading 40-38. This match gets concluded Wednesday night at the City Centre while game two is set up for Friday also at the City Centre and as they say: ?You won?t want to miss it!?
That?s it for now. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah, over all I?m James Adderley.
