Three P.U.P. standard bearers selected

Standard bearers have been selected by the Peoples United Party in three constituencies. The closest contest was in Toledo West where incumbent representative Marcial Mes barely fought off a challenge by Oscar Requena. Mes received one thousand one hundred and twenty-one votes to one thousand thirty-seven for Requena. In Dangriga former Mayor Cassian Nunez held off Ivan Ramos by three hundred sixty-two votes to one hundred eighty-two. Nunez will seek to succeed P.U.P. representative Sylvia Flores, who is retiring. The race in Cayo Central was also contested with incumbent Mario Castellanos beating the insurgent Evaristo Avella five hundred thirty-nine to three hundred eight. Strong intra party challenges can either be interpreted as a healthy indicator of democracy or a sign of serious cracks in party unity.
